Are You Dating A Stalker? How to Recognize The Signs

Movie: "The Perfect Guy" Starring: Sanaa Lathan and Michael Early

You called it quits and based on the last conversation you two had he seemed to get the picture. Now he’s flooding your inbox with endless messages about how much he loves you wants to make things work. You already told him it was over! Is this just a man fighting for the woman he loves or do you have potential stalker on your hands? Here are some tips on when to be concerned and what signs to look for.

Frightening Facts

According to the National Center for Victims of Crime, 7.5 million people are stalked each year in the United States. Over 85% of stalking victims are stalked by someone they know. Furthermore, 61% of female victims and 44% of male victims of stalking are stalked by a current or former intimate partner.

Concerned VS Control

It may seem like he’s just being a loving and caring spouse who wants what’s best for you, but if he’s making demands like what you can and cannot wear, who you should and shouldn’t associate with and wanting to know your every move then this is something to be wary of. Behavior like this only leads to unfortunate circumstances to come!

What is Stalker Behavior?

Unwanted advances like constantly making contact with you by calling, texting, sending emails or showing up at your home or place of work are all signs of a stalker. These things come after the person does not get what they want.

When Should I Become Concerned?

Realistically, at all times! I’m not saying that if he calls you or sends an assortment of Edible Arrangements after a disagreement or nasty break up that he’ a stalker, but when it has been made crystal clear that you do not want any parts of what he has to offer. But if he’s still reaching out and is showing aggression or violent behavior then it’s time to notify family, friends and the authorities.

How Likely Am I To Be Stalked?

There are no certain criteria a person needs to have to be a victim of stalking. It could happen to anyone. You could become a victim by just interacting with someone in person or online. And yes, there is a such thing as online stalking! It’s defined as cyberstalking– the same behavior of uwanted communication– but it’s done electronically through social networks like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

How Can I Protect Myself?

Get familiar with the signs and always stay alert! Making arrangements to meet up with your potential stalker to discuss a resolution is unnecessary. If it’s over, it’s over. Exchanging belongings can be done, but have a police officer escort you to the designated meeting area if possible. Your life is more valuable than anything else and protecting yourself is imperative!
